This is an oral capsule that is used to treat diseases of the liver and gallbladder when used as directed by your veterinarian. It may also be used to help remove gallstones that contain cholesterol. Ursodiol works by improving the flow of bile into and out of the gall bladder and into the intestine. This prevents bile from building up. If bile builds up, it can be potentially toxic. This medication can also help decrease cholesterol in the bile by reducing production of it in the liver. Ursodiol can also reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food and increases its breakdown which can be especially helpful in removing gallstones that are made if cholesterol. What results can I expect? It can take weeks to months of using Ursodiol in your pet to see improvement in clinical symptoms and lab work. What form(s) does Ursodiol come in? These are capsules that are given orally. Generic Name: Ursodiol(Common Drug Name) Common Brand Name: Actigall Dose and Administration: Ursodiol is an oral medication. Always follow your veterinarians specific instructions regarding the use of this medication. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember but never give two doses at once. Give Ursodiol only to the pet it has been prescribed for. Consult with your veterinarian if you have specific questions regarding the use of this medication. Uses: Ursodiol is a prescription medication used in dogs and cats to treat certain diseases of the liver and gallbladder by reducing the amount of cholesterol in bile and bile stones. Possible Side Effects: Some animals may experience diarrhea while taking this medication. Ursodiol may cause liver disease to worsen in some pets. Symptoms of this may include vomiting, depression, or jaundice (yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes). Certain animals may also be truly allergic to this medication and can suffer an allergic reaction. Other side effects are possible. These animals should only take Ursodiol if the benefits outweigh the risks. The safety in pregnant and lactating females has not been studied in all species.
